Waking Up With Numbness or Tingling In Your hands?

Are you waking up with numbness or tingling in your hands?

You’re not alone, this is something I hear from patients all the time.

It can show up as:
• Pins and needles in the fingers or hand
• A “dead” or heavy feeling in the hand and/or the whole arm
• Needing to shake your hand out in the morning
• Symptoms that come and go, or gradually worsen over time

• Cold or pale fingers

A lot of people assume it’s just carpal tunnel, but it’s often more complex than that.

In many cases, these symptoms can be coming from irritation or sensitivity anywhere along the nerve pathway, from the neck, through the shoulder, and into the arm.

What can help? (here are some simple starting points):

• Try changing your sleep position, avoid prolonged pressure on your arms or sleeping with your arms overhead
• Use a pillow to support your arm in a more neutral position

• Pay attention to daytime patterns such as long drives, desk work, or repetitive tasks that aggravate
• Gentle movement (not aggressive stretching) can sometimes reduce symptoms. I call it the "Hawaiian Bobble Head" maneuver - if you know, you know.

What treatment can look like:

Treatment isn’t just “working on the hand.”

It often includes:
• Looking at how the neck and shoulder are contributing
• Reducing irritation to sensitive nerves
• Improving movement and tolerance to daily activities
• Gradually building strength and control

What to expect:

For many people, this is very manageable, but it’s not usually a “one treatment fix.”

It tends to respond best to:
• Consistency
• The right type of loading at the right pace, not just rest
• Understanding what’s driving your symptoms

If this sounds familiar, it’s worth looking into > especially if it’s been going on for a while or starting to affect your sleep.
